His research over the years included many floral crops with a particular focus on cool weather crops that would require less energy for production. Dr. Wilkins’ research helped create the multi-million dollar Alstroemeria industry here in the U.S. and he is considered the “Father of the Alstroemeria Industry.” Additionally, his research included branching control for roses, carnations, and poinsettias. He and his graduate student, John Dole, authored two editions of Floriculture Species and Production, now the standard text at universities worldwide. Industry Honors Dr. Paul Thomas through AFE

Paul especially loved mentoring students and helping them embark on horticultural careers. For more than 20 years, he was a professor at the University of Georgia, where he taught greenhouse management, horticultural business practices and interiorscaping classes. A key component of his program was facilitating experiential learning through industry internships. Thomas served as the State Extension Specialist in floriculture. In this position, he planned and implemented regional and state programs involving greenhouses and the florist industry. He had recently retired from UGA and, just this month, started work as the American Floral Endowment’s ambassador for internships and scholarships. Paul’s greatest achievement was his impact on thousands of families in Latin America and beyond who even today have better lives because of the floral industry. Families and small communities have developed amid the industry which Paul helped to establish. Since childhood, Paul Daum has shown a passion for and interest in flowers. His early agricultural experience was in the temperate climate; however, most of his adult life was spent in the semi-tropical climates of Florida, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Paul received a master’s degree in Plant Physiology from Ohio State after his service during WWII. Paul was a proud veteran of WWII. One of those was becoming an expert welder and he spent many hours in his shop often repairing or building things for others. The American Floral Endowment (AFE) announces a new memorial tribute in memory of Arthur Brentwood Humphrey, a longtime friend of the floral industry who died on October 6, 2020, at the age of 74. The $1,000 fund was established by the Mayme Leong Family of Ah Sam Florist and Ken & Lynn Young of Phoenix Flower Shops. Arthur was the owner of FM3 Systems and provided computer consulting services and business solutions to florists across the country to help increase their productivity and profitability. In 2000, Krissy segued that energy into her successful career at SAF. She served as AFA’s president and on their board. Shelby is a former president of the Arkansas Florists Association. She was also actively involved in the Society for American Florists, as a volunteer group leader who helped with regional educational sessions and served on their Consumer Marketing Committee. It couldn’t have been a more perfect day to celebrate and honor a man who gave so much to the floral industry. Family and friends from near and abroad joined together to remember August “Gus” De Hertogh at the J C Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC, on Saturday, March 16, 2019. Gus passed away on October 26, 2018. In all, nearly 200 attended the event on a perfect spring afternoon.
