Stories of Support and Growth

We can try to measure the impact of the American Floral Endowment (AFE) in the number of research projects we fund, scholarships awarded, or educational programs developed. But the true impact is best understood through the people whose careers, work, and businesses have been shaped by that support.

Across the floral industry, from university labs to greenhouses and flower shops, our programs help turn ideas into solutions, support the next generation of professionals, and strengthen the industry’s future. That impact is possible because AFE was built with the future in mind.

An endowment, by definition, requires foresight. It asks us to look beyond today’s challenges and consider what the industry will need tomorrow, five, ten, even twenty years from now. That future-focused mindset guides every decision we make, including where research dollars are invested, how educational opportunities are expanded, and which initiatives will deliver the greatest impact for all segments of floriculture.

Investing in People and Progress

Many of the challenges facing floriculture today, including pest management, postharvest care, and sustainability, are addressed through our funded research. That research often begins with a question from the industry and evolves into solutions developed by university scientists working closely with growers and businesses. It also supports graduate research students pursuing studies in floriculture and horticulture.

AFE gave me the initial funding for my research, and when other granting agencies saw the AFE funding, they were motivated to fund me further. I can honestly say that AFE has been instrumental in my academic career in floriculture and plant breeding.”  -Dr. Mark Bridgen, Cornell University

I love the idea of tackling real-world challenges in horticulture and being part of the solution. But even more than that, the chance to mentor students – help them find that moment when plant science clicks is incredibly powerful. When a student asks to walk with you after class because something you said lit a fire in their brain, that’s when you realize this work matters.” -Bret Timmons, North Carolina State University

“Being funded by the American Floral Endowment provides me with more than just financial support; it gives me confidence and encouragement at a pivotal time in my academic and professional development. Being supported by the American Floral Endowment has allowed me to dedicate myself more fully to my research and graduate studies, knowing that I have the backing of a community that values environmental stewardship and education.”   -Tori Guarino University of Florida

For students pursuing careers in floriculture, AFE scholarships and internships often provide a crucial stepping stone. Each year, more than 30 scholarships are awarded to students studying floriculture and related fields. These scholarships help reduce financial barriers while encouraging talented individuals to build careers in the industry.

“Especially in these uncertain times, the ability to reduce the financial burden is significant. This recognition is also really flattering and an honor. To be recognized by the American Floral Endowment while working toward becoming a floriculture professor is huge. It gives me more motivation to continue what I am doing and to do it as well as I possibly can.” – Rose Elbert, Michigan State University

This scholarship means the world to me. It lifts a huge weight off my shoulders and allows me to chase my goals with everything I’ve got. It’s not just support; it’s a reminder that people believe in my future and want to see me and other students succeed.” -Trell Amoss, Oklahoma State University

As a graduate student, I am lucky enough to have been able to follow my passion for plants and agriculture. Every day I get the opportunity to learn more about the incredible and fast-paced world of plant breeding & genetics, and even get to contribute towards the well-being of growers and their communities in the form of research, teaching, and public outreach…

Scholarships from organizations like the American Floral Endowment allow me to focus more on what really matters to me – improving the health of people, plants, and their communities.” -Adam D’Angelo, University of Wisconsin

AFE’s support also extends to professional development and industry education, helping ensure that knowledge continues to flow across generations. Educational and travel grants allow professionals to attend conferences, participate in specialized training, and connect with peers from across the industry.

I extend my deepest gratitude to AFE for its generous support and dedication to continuing education within the floral industry… The insights and expertise gained through opportunities like this enable me to contribute meaningfully to the elevation of the floral community by sharing knowledge, fostering creativity, and promoting professional excellence.

Thank you for your enduring commitment to nurturing growth, innovation, and education across all sectors of floriculture. It is a privilege to be part of an industry strengthened by the vision and generosity of the American Floral Endowment.”  – Christina Ignatius AIFD, EMC, PFCI, AzMF

These experiences help individuals expand their expertise, bring new ideas back to their businesses, and strengthen collaboration throughout the floral community.

Building Resources for the Future & Looking Ahead

AFE also develops educational initiatives designed to address emerging industry priorities and prepare for the future. One example is Sustainabloom, a sustainability education program that provides research-based resources to help businesses across the floral supply chain navigate evolving environmental and business challenges.

One of the most valuable aspects of Sustainabloom is how it brings the industry together to share knowledge and experiences. Sustainability is a journey, and having a platform where businesses can learn from one another; what works, what challenges exist, and how to adapt; makes a huge difference. By collaborating, we’re not just working to find solutions for today, but shaping a stronger, more sustainable future for the entire floral industry.” – Susannah Ball of Ball Horticultural Company.

It’s worth pausing to consider what the industry might look like without AFE. Fewer research breakthroughs. Fewer opportunities for students entering floriculture, or considering pursuing this field. Less coordination around education and sustainability. Slower progress in addressing shared challenges.

At a time when costs are rising across every aspect of business, maintaining momentum requires continued and increased investment and the collective support of the industry it serves. Together, those investments help ensure that floriculture continues to grow stronger for generations to come.

AFE exists because of the generosity and shared belief of people across our industry – growers, wholesalers, retailers, suppliers, and allied partners – working together to build a better future. As we celebrate AFE’s 65th anniversary in 2026, I can’t think of a better time to come together and strengthen the foundation for the next generation.” – David Garcia, Pete Garcia Company/Garcia Group, Chairman of the American Floral Endowment
