New Videos Tout Floriculture Successes

 

 

Five new segmented videos were released to highlight floriculture successes through industry collaboration, support and participation.

Our introductory video "Heard of the American Floral Endowment?" helps educate those who aren't aware of AFE's programs, while the student/faculty video "Ready for a Career in Floriculture or Horticulture?" promotes the industry and the many programs AFE offers to students.

Here Today, Gone to Maui!

The Endowment is going tropical this year, holding its biggest annual fundraising event in Hawaii!

The 2016 Annual Fundraising Dinner is on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016 from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua (Maui), in conjunction with SAF's Annual Convention.

Saying Goodbye to Two Industry Leaders

Jim Nordlie

Floriculture figures Peter Ullrich, former CEO and Chairman of Esmeralda Farms, and James "Jim" Nordlie of Nordlie, Inc., passed away on June 29 and July 1, respectively.

Peter was one of the first growers to establish a presence in Latin America, and his farms and companies have supported tens of thousands of families throughout several countries over the past 44 years.

Jim helped expand Nordlie, Inc. to seven stores in Michigan, Ohio and Florida, and managed two rose-growing greenhouses in Ohio and two rose farms in Guatemala.

A named fund was created for Peter Ullrich/Esmeralda Farms and a memorial tribute was established for Jim Nordlie.

Where Are They Now?

Cathy Araos is a former AFE Mosmiller intern turned biology co-teacher at Niles North High School in Skokie, Ill.

For three years, Cathy has been educating students at Niles North about plant and soil science, greenhouse management and floral design.

Terril Nell and Jim Daly Receive Honors

Jim Daly

Terril A. Nell, Ph.D., and Jim Daly were both recognized for their many contributions and achievements in the floral industry.

Terril was inducted into the Interior Plantscape Hall of Fame during the Plantscape Awards Celebration at Cultivate '16.

Jim was honored at the 7th Annual Flower-Naming Ceremony during the International Floriculture Expo by having a flower named in his honor, and is only the seventh person to receive this award.

Meet YPC Member Kaylee South

Kaylee South is a graduate student at The Ohio State University and began her journey in the floriculture industry when she was in middle school.

Her supportive teachers in high school and college, and their passion for plants, sparked her interest in academics and research within floriculture. 

She understands the importance of bringing students into the horticulture programs in colleges and universities, as well as in high schools. So much so, that she now serves as the Education Task Force Chairman of the Young Professionals Council.

Teleflora Campaign Stimulates AFE Donations


Teleflora ran a contest throughout May and June for its members who made a new, three-year pledge of $15/month or more to support floriculture.

By contributing to the Endowment, members were entered into a drawing to win one full registration for SAF's Annual Convention, and a 4-night stay at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua (Maui), from Sept. 21-24, 2016.

AFE Trustees Visit Ohio State

In July, AFE Trustees met in Columbus, Ohio for their annual board and committee meetings, and approved funding for the 2016-2017 year.

Trustees also visited The Ohio State University (OSU) to get a tour of the campus, where they learned about OSU research projects and programs.

Later that evening, AFE hosted a dinner for OSU faculty and students, as well as our Young Professionals Council...

Scottish Student Awarded AFE Scholarship

Twenty-one-year-old Jamie Satterthwaite from Scotland was selected to receive the 2016 Markham-Colegrave International Scholarship through AFE and the David Colegrave Foundation.

Jamie is pursuing a Bachelor of Science at Scotland's Rural College, studying horticulture and working as a trainee grower. He was awarded $4,500 and will have the opportunity to intern at a horticultural business for eight weeks in the U.S.
