Supporters Rally to Raise Floriculture Funding


AFE's biggest fundraising event of the year, the 2015 Annual Fundraising Dinner, was a record-breaking occasion, with more than 270 supporters in attendance.

Among the many highlights, four new named funds totaling more than $850,000 were announced, as well as new scholarships, educational programs and donor recognitions.

Flowers as Memorial Tributes: A Tradition Worth Preserving

 

It is often hard to know what is the best thing to say to someone who loses a family member or friend. But flowers always know exactly how to comfort a grieving family.

In the "Funeral Directors and Flowers – Insights into Floral Tributes in the Funeral Industry" report, funeral directors agreed that flowers and plants are considered the most important physical element at a funeral, even more than sympathy cards.

Protecting Gerbera From Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew is the most common and damaging disease for gerbera crops. The lack of disease-resistant gerbera plants has been a major limiting factor for crop production.

New AFE-funded research focused on increasing the plants' resistance to powdery mildew through gene transference.

Four New Named Funds Established


Four new AFE Named Funds were announced at the 2015 AFE Fundraising Dinner totaling more than $850,000 in funding for AFE's scholarship and research programs. Read more about these donors and how these funds will be used.

  • Hortica Insurance Fund
  • Smithers-Oasis Fund

Nearly $40,000 Awarded in Scholarships

Seventeen students have been awarded AFE scholarships for 2015, totaling more than $37,000.

More than 75 applications were received for this scholarship cycle.

The next deadline for applications is: May 1, 2016.

Two Floriculture MS/Ph.D. Scholarships Available

 

Applications are now being accepted for the new Altman Family Scholarship and the Paul Ecke, Jr. Scholarship for graduate students who have the skills and passion to become leading floricultural scientists and educators.

The application deadline is Feb. 1, 2016. More information is available at Endowment.org.

Pollinator Health in the Urban Landscape


The health of pollinators was the main focus of the first National Conference on Protecting Pollinators in the Urban Landscape, of which AFE was a sponsor.

The conference, which was held in October, included presentations that addressed the declining health of bees worldwide.

Chris Currey Appointed to Vic & Margaret Ball Committee

AFE announced the appointment of Christopher Currey, Ph.D. as the newest member of its Vic & Margaret Ball Committee.

Currey will be working with several AFE Trustees and other faculty members to review student applications for the Vic & Margaret Ball Intern Scholarship and provide counsel to help promote the program to students.

Thanks to Wholesalers Involved in AFE's Nickel Program!

AFE thanks the wholesalers who have signed on to contribute to our new nickel program – where five cents per box or case ordered is contributed to AFE quarterly.

The Endowment also recognizes the wholesalers involved in another similar program, based on one cent per cube.

AFE is participating in the national movement known as #GivingTuesday again this year, and encouraging charitable giving from supporters to help AFE continue providing benefits for the entire industry.
