AFE Participated in #GivingTuesday on December 2

For the first time, AFE participated in a national movement known as #GivingTuesday to encourage charitable giving.

Following the chaos of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday (Dec. 2) was a unique opportunity to harness the generous spirit of the holiday season by making a tax-deductible year-end donation to AFE.

Funeral Directors and Flowers - Insights into Floral Tributes in the Funeral Industry

The Floral Marketing Research Fund (established by AFE in 2008) is analyzing data from the recent survey of funeral directors to learn about attitudes toward the use of floral tributes in funeral services. Funeral directors were asked about consumers’ reactions toward sympathy flowers, their current relationships and experiences working with local floral retailers and more. The results will be released in early 2015.

In search of current or future graduate students with the skills and passion to become the next notable floriculture researcher or educator! Apply for the Paul Ecke Jr. M.S./Ph.D. Scholarship Program now through Feb. 1, 2015. 

The scholarship honors the late Paul Ecke Jr. of Encinitas, Calif., who made significant contributions to the floriculture industry and believed strongly in research and education. Ecke was concerned about the future of floriculture and recognized that innovative researchers and educators are necessary for the continued success of the industry.

Help a Pollinator -- And Help Horticulture!

The green industry has an important opportunity to step forward and help make a difference in the ongoing debate about pollinator health -- and at the same time, reinforce the positive impact that floral and nursery crops have on our landscape.

AFE has joined SAF in the Bee and Pollinator Stewardship Initiative, to encourage wise stewardship in nurseries and greenhouses, preserve neonicotinoids as a part of our toolbox, and encourage research that will lead to increased scientific knowledge, rather than emotional arguments.

New Communications Specialist Joins AFE

Michelle Altenberg has been named AFE’s new communications specialist. Altenberg will work closely with Executive Director Debi Aker on media relations, social media, the quarterly bulletin, donor cultivation and website management.

“I am very excited to be a part of this dynamic team working to advance the floriculture and environmental horticulture industries,” Altenberg said.

Third Award Bestowed to Murder, Sex and Greed Video

Three for three! The “Murder, Sex and Greed” animated awareness video produced in September 2013 has won its third communications award, a Thoth Award bestowed by the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The video was developed to educate the floriculture industry about the positive impacts AFE makes on critical industry concerns.

The Internship of a Lifetime!

Meet Tha Cha

Tha Cha, then a student at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, was amazed at the breadth of the Vic and Margaret Ball Intern Scholarship program when he embarked to Tagawa Greenhouses in Colorado for an internship. He is now a production manager at Tagawa’s facilities in Brighton, Colo.

Cha’s internship in 2011 focused on greenhouse production while exposing him to operations, transplanting, maintenance, accounting, senior management and more. He also learned how innovation and adaptation are keys to surviving in an ever-changing industry.

$34,000 Awarded to Floral Design Students!

AFE awards block grants annually to institutions with a floral design program through the James & Helen Phillip Scholarship Grant. Each school administers and awards the scholarships funded through this grant. Grants for the 2014-2015 cycle will be awarded to:

  • College of Southern Nevada - $3,000
  • Joliet Junior College - $5,000
  • Kishwaukee College - $6,000
  • The Ohio State Univ. ATI - $5,000
  • Mississippi State University- $5,000
  • Texas A&M University - $5,000
  • Hennepin Technical College - $5,000

$47,150 in Educational Grants Awarded

The Endowment is proud to have awarded six organizations educational grants for 2014-2015!
