Improved Packaging Enhances Fresh Cut Flowers

 

An AFE-funded study focused on improved packaging can help the industry increase shelf life, improve shipping and storage options and lower shipping costs for fresh cut flowers. The packaging uses technology that is eco-friendly, utilizing natural compounds as an alternative to fungicide treatments.

Ecke Scholarship Recipient: "Success Breeds Motivation"

Garrett Owen, currently pursuing his M.S. in Horticulture Science from North Carolina State University, was awarded the 2013 Paul Ecke, Jr. Scholarship, a merit-based scholarship honoring the late floriculture pioneer.

Owen, who aspires to become a floriculture extension specialist and professor, will continue his education as a doctoral candidate in floriculture research at Purdue University under Roberto G. Lopez, Ph.D.

Remembering Jacob Van Namen, Floral Industry Pioneer

Jacob Van Namen, founder of Vans Floral Products and former AFE Trustee, died March 31 in Chicago. He was 90. He grew Van's Wholesale Florists from a single location in the Chicago area to 12 distribution centers in six states by the 1990s. Mr. Van Namen believed in investing his time, talent and resources back to the floral industry he loved.

Contributions can be made to the Jacob & Rita Van Namen Marketing Scholarship through AFE.

AFE Participates at 2013 National Floriculture Forum

AFE's Vic and Margaret Ball Committee held their biannual meeting in conjunction with the National Floriculture Forum (NFF) in New Hampshire. NFF's activities included a tour of several well-established New England greenhouses, as well as a full day dedicated to educational sessions focused on "Creative Thinking, Creative Funding: Research, Extension, and Teaching Programs and Consortiums."

Internships Pay Off!

NFF attendees met Jessica Boldt while touring Pleasant View. Bolt, a 2005 Vic & Margaret Ball intern, used what she learned during that internship to make her way to current position: production R&D manager for Pleasant View. During her Ball internship, she learned how to handle production tasks on a large scale and how to effectively manage employees.

AFE Addresses Pest Management Attendees

AFE Trustee and Research Chairman David Niklas and AFE Research Coordinator Gus De Hertogh spoke about AFE's work at the 29th annual Pest and Production Management Conference. Much of the research presented at the conference had received AFE funding, as had many of the speakers. Niklas said the cost savings from the acquired knowledge at the conference could be huge.

Congratulations to Grant Recipients!

AFE provides block grants annually to institutions with a floral design program through James & Helen Phillip Grants. Grants for the 2013-2014 cycle will be awarded to:

- College of Southern Nevada, $3,000

- Joliet Junior College, $5,000

- Kishwaukee College, $6,000

- The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute, $5,000

- Mississippi State, $4,000

- Texas A&M, $1,500
