AFE Announces Three New Scholarships!

Students now have three new scholarships to help them toward a career in the floriculture or horticulture industries! Online applications and supporting materials are due no later than May 1.

More than 20 AFE scholarships are available annually.

Memorial Tribute Established for Bill Belden

The Pete Garcia Company established a memorial tribute within AFE honoring William C. “Bill” Belden, president of the Oscar G. Carlstedt Company in Jacksonville, Fla. Belden died Jan. 1 at age 82.

To make a contribution to the Bill Belden Memorial Tribute, visit www.endowment.org/donate and specify the donation is for the Bill Belden Memorial Tribute in the “gift options” section. All AFE contributions are tax deductible, and the family is always notified of contributions made.

Fantastic News for Cut Flower Advancements

The Floral Marketing Research Fund (FMRF), established by Trustees of the American Floral Endowment, received a $600,000 donation from the Flower Promotion Organization (FPO) to fund cut flower marketing and research to help increase the consumption of cut flowers. 

This research will benefit all members of the cut flower community, from growers to consumers and everyone in between.

The Relevance of Social Media in the Floral Industry

Social media is now a fundamental part of marketing and outreach in all industries and is an effective way to help businesses increase profits, interact with customers and garner new fans.

“Research shows that 85 percent of all businesses that have a dedicated social media platform as part of their marketing strategy reported an increase in their market exposure,” Charlie Hall, professor and Ellison Chair in the International Floriculture Department of Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M University, said, “and that 58 percent of businesses that have used social media marketing for over 3 years reported an increase in sales over that period.”

AFE Trustees Visit the Golden State

The AFE Board of Trustees met in early January for their board meeting in sunny Los Angeles to plan the Endowment’s goals for the year and to experience some of the Golden Coast’s floral-related attractions, like the LA Flower Market and Teleflora headquarters.

AFE Welcomes New Communications Specialist!

Welcome, Suzanna! Suzanna McCloskey, a Tennessee native, joins AFE as its new communications specialist. Before coming to AFE, she worked in public relations for the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority and before that was a writer for Knoxville’s daily newspaper. Additionally, she was managing editor for the University of Tennessee’s student-produced news website and a board member for the East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists.

De Hertogh Honored as Distinguished Leader


AFE research coordinator and acclaimed industry expert Gus De Hertogh, Ph.D., received a Hutchinson Medal from the Chicago Botanic Garden in September. The medal recognizes those who demonstrate leadership or professional accomplishments in horticulture, plant science or conservation. De Hertogh has extensive experience with bulbs and specializes in the physiology of ornamental flowering bulbs. In addition to his role with AFE, De Hertogh serves as emeritus professor at North Carolina State University and has been recognized by the American Society for Horticultural Science, the Society of American Florists and the American Horticultural Society, among others.
