AFE Congratulates Scholarship Recipients!

Seventeen horticulture students have been awarded scholarships from the American Floral Endowment (AFE), totaling more than $26,000. “It is always rewarding to see how many amazing young people there are who love the floriculture industry, and we are very pleased to be able to help them continue along this career path,” said AFE's Scholarship Chairperson PJ Ellison, of Ellison's Greenhouses in Brenham, Texas.

AFE-Funded Research Combats Impatiens Downy Mildew

Currently, the floriculture industry is reeling from a disease that has developed with amazing speed on a key bedding plant - Impatiens. There were signs of a problem beginning in 2004, when greenhouse growers in a few states noticed leaves curling downwards and there was a white coating of spores across the undersurface of the leaves. This was a downy mildew disease, caused by Plasmopara obducens, a pathogen known to occur on wild impatiens in the United States since the late 1800s.

AFE Visits Colorful Colorado to See Whats Blooming

In May, AFE had a very successful trip to Colorado visiting several industry supporters and friends. A special thanks to DWF Wholesale Florists, Amato Wholesale Florist, Welby Gardens, Lafayette Florist Gift Shop & Garden Center, and Design Master color tool, inc. for allowing AFE to stop by. We are so grateful for all of the support we have from the Colorado floriculture industry.

Ball Horticultural Company Hosts AFE

AFE recently visited Ball Horticultural Co. during the Board of Trustees meeting in Chicago, Il., from July 18-20th.

Presentations from Ball employees were made on a variety of topics including Downy Mildew, Chrysantis, and Cool Wave Pansies. AFE toured the Ball Premiere Lab, a state-of-the-art facility for coating, pelleting, priming and testing of flower seeds, as well as the Seed Distribution Center.
