AFE Responds to Downy Mildew on Impatiens walleriana

Many segments of the floriculture industry are facing an increasingly difficult battle with downy mildew on Impatiens walleriana. AFE is working together with researchers, extension educators and representatives from the impatiens production industry to learn more about controlling impatiens downy mildew.

Funding Deadline June 1st!

Don’t miss AFE’s research and grant deadline of June 1st for Scientific Pre-Proposals, Gus Poesch Pre-Proposals, Public Benefits Pre-Proposals and Educational Grant applications for 2013-2014 funding.

Applications and Pre-Proposal forms are online (see links on right). A complete list of research priorities can be found on the AFE website. Research projects can last from one to three years and any reasonable, but justifiable budget will be considered.

Ensuring Floricultures Sustainability

The following article is reprinted from the November 2011 issue of Floral Management magazine.

Do you want to ensure maximum shelf or pot life for your products? Learn to make your flowers and plants more cold and drought tolerant? Perhaps you want to ensure the sustainability of your family business by finding qualified, educated employees with a passion for flowers and plants, or find out what fragrance and color combinations appeal to members of Generation Y. Whatever your priorities, you have probably already benefited from research or educational programs funded by the American Floral Endowment (AFE).

AFE Trustees Took Texas By Storm!

After a yearlong drought, the AFE Board of Trustees brought some much-needed rain to Texas during a recent visit to College Station for the January Board Meeting. Even with tornado warnings and delayed flights, weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the Trustees. The AFE Board convened at Texas A&M University on Jan. 25-27, at a meeting hosted by Charlie Hall, Ph.D., Ellison Chair in International Floriculture. Activities included tours of the campus buildings, faculty presentations and a reception at the Agrilife Center.

Every Donation to AFE Makes a Difference

What do these floriculture accomplishments all have in common?

  • Development of the Cold Chain
  • Improved design for packing and shipping
  • Protocols to eliminate leaf miners
  • Increased vase life of flowers

The answer is AFE!

AFE Remembers Margaret Ball

The American Floral Endowment is deeply saddened by the passing of one of the floriculture industry’s most cherished members, Margaret Ball. Ball passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at the age of 90. As the co-founder of the Vic and Margaret Ball Intern Scholarship Program, which is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this year, Margaret Ball was instrumental in providing educational opportunities to floriculture students.
