50th Anniversary Commemorative Dinner Highlights

More than 200 industry members came together to celebrate AFE’s 50th Anniversary during the annual fundraising dinner, September 22 in Orlando.

This evening began with a special champagne toast dedicated to the AFE donors of the past 50 years. Special donor recognitions, the unveiling of the new AFE website, and photos from past AFE events were also part of the festivities. Attendees received a special 50th Anniversary Commemorative Program.

Genetic Approaches to Improved Cold Tolerance

Developing frost-tolerant bedding plants will help to expand the early spring and fall bedding plant markets. Unfortunately, few bedding plant crops are strongly frost-tolerant, limiting the crops available for early spring and fall sales.

Freezing tolerance of many species increases following exposure to low, non-freezing temperatures, through a process termed “cold acclimation”.

Balancing Between Family and the Floral Business

Many a time, forts mysteriously sprouted in and around the flower cooler, vases, blocks of floral foam, and boxes of other materials in the back room of the Dandelions Flowers & Gifts shop in Eugene, Oregon. Other times, trains puffed around these obstacles to places unknown. Shirley Lyons, co-owner of the flower and gift shop since 1974, recalled these times fondly as she reminisced about balancing her family with business.
