Will Carlson Memorial Tribute Established

A Memorial Tribute has been established within the American Floral Endowment (AFE) honoring Dr. Will Carlson, who died January 20, 2010, in East Lansing, Mich. The tribute was established by Jack Van Namen of Vans Inc., a long-time friend and former student of Dr. Carlson.

Born August 20, 1941, Dr. Carlson was a Professor Emeritus of Floriculture at Michigan State University for 36 years where he earned the Distinguished Faculty Designation in 1995.

To contribute to the Will Carlson Memorial Tribute, mail your donation to the American Floral Endowment, c/o Will Carlson Memorial Tribute, 1601 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA  22314. As a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit, all contributions are tax deductible. The family is always notified.

Currently, one of the most widely discussed topics in the floriculture industry, which is promulgated by consumers exhibiting greater degrees of environmental awareness, is the issue of environmental sustainability.  This has led to a desire for products that not only solve the needs of consumers but are also produced and marketed using sustainable production and business practices.  Consumers increasingly place a great emphasis on sustainable product packaging and this has carried over to the greenhouse/floral sector in the form of biodegradable pots.

AFE Past Vic and Margaret Ball Intern Receives the 2010 GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year Award

Drew Guffey, a 2009 Vic and Margaret Ball scholarship recipient, was recently named the 2010 GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year.

In his application, Drew wrote, “As I became older and really began to work in the industry, I only realized more how much I enjoyed the work I was doing, not only for my family’s business – Johnston Greenhouses, located outside Pittsburgh — but for the happiness that this industry provides other people.”

March 1st Deadline Approaching!

Vic & Margaret Ball – paid internship at commercial production facility for a period of three, four or six months. Upon successful completion of the internship, students receive $1,500 (three-month), $4,000 (four-month) or $6,000 (six-month) scholarship.

Mosmiller – paid internship at a floral retail, wholesale or allied trade location for a period of 10-16 weeks. Upon successful completion of the internship, students receive a $2,000 scholarship

Applications and supporting materials must be received at AFE no later than March 1st

Memorial Tributes are a way to remember and honor industry members, family and friends in a special and lasting manner.

A $1,000 contribution establishes a tribute.  Once established, contributions can be made in any amount.
