Endowment Receives $500,000 Donation

A loving daughter of the floral industry, TV producer Lee Phillip Bell, has donated $500,000 to the American Floral Endowment (AFE) to create a scholarship fund in memory of her parents.  The James and Helen Phillip Endowed Scholarship Fund will provide tuition assistance to students training in retail floral design operations.

Following The Research

Every year, the Endowment funds critical research that provides valuable insights and fuels continued industry growth.

But for the AFE Board members who guide funding philosophies and administer spending, allocation is much more than just writing a check. Through annual visits to key research locations, Board members  gain first-hand insight into industry problems while monitoring projects.

Why Give to AFE?

Although contributions to AFE are fully tax deductible, many people don’t understand the wide-ranging benefits of supporting the Endowment. AFE is not just a non-profit organization, and it doesn’t just foster the benefits for growers. Everyone in the horticulture industry profits from AFE, whether they know it or not.

Donors understand that their businesses are successful, in large part, because of the research funded by AFE and, therefore, are motivated to give back. Although, this should be everyone’s desire, there are even more pragmatic reasons for supporting the Endowment.

FloraStar Donates Proceeds to AFE

As a final thank you to the floriculture industry, all funds remaining in the FloraStar account as of July 2008 were donated to AFE during this year’s OFA Short Course in Columbus, Ohio. FloraStar — an association whose purpose was to develop and promote new varieties of potted and flowering plants for the marketplace — was dissolved earlier this year, and the Endowment was selected as the recipient of more than $36,000 because of its similar focus on research and its long tradition of forwarding and supporting the floriculture industry.

AFE/OFA Co-Host Roundtable During OFA Short Course

The American Floral Endowment was presented with a check for $5,000 by OFA Executive Director John Holmes during an AFE/OFA co-hosted roundtable held during this year’s OFA Short Course. Focusing on the needs for floriculture students, Holmes said the roundtable was the perfect time for OFA to recognize the “outstanding work that AFE does toward improving the floriculture industry through research and education, as exemplified through its scholarship programs.”

Trustees Express

The American Floral Endowment Board of Trustees wishes to thank the many sponsors and supporters of the 2008 AFE fundraising dinner held Wednesday, September 17, at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, Florida.  More than 200 individuals attended the event.   The proceeds from this annual dinner help offset operating expenses so more of the proceeds from the corpus can support the research and educational programs that benefit the entire floral industry.

Mark your calendar for AFE’s 2009 Fundraising Dinner, to be held Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at The Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort in Phoenix, Arizona.

"Fusarium can be devastating to many bulb crops.  AFE's funded research in this area is essential for our future and our well-being."
