Se ha establecido un homenaje conmemorativo en la AFE en honor a Gayle (Gay) Smith, de 63 a\u00f1os, quien falleci\u00f3 el 1 de marzo de 2018. El homenaje se estableci\u00f3 gracias a una generosa contribuci\u00f3n de\u00a0Chrysal Am\u00e9ricas<\/strong><\/a> Presidente Jim Kaplan. Smith trabaj\u00f3 como director t\u00e9cnico de Chrysal durante m\u00e1s de 18 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

\u201cNos honra establecer el\u00a0Homenaje en memoria de Gay Smith<\/strong> \u2014en nombre de nuestro personal, de nuestros clientes y de toda la industria\u2014, dijo Kaplan.<\/p>\n

\u201cGay formaba parte de la familia Chrysal y se la echar\u00e1 much\u00edsimo de menos. Este homenaje conmemorativo con AFE es un digno tributo a su dedicaci\u00f3n no solo a nuestra empresa, sino a la industria que amaba.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith fue un miembro activo de la industria y una gran defensora de todo lo relacionado con la floricultura. Su carrera abarc\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 45 a\u00f1os, y llev\u00f3 con orgullo el t\u00edtulo de la \u201creina\u201d del cuidado y la manipulaci\u00f3n postcosecha.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Creci\u00f3 en los suburbios de Phoenix y asisti\u00f3 a la Universidad de Arizona, donde estudi\u00f3 horticultura ambiental. Despu\u00e9s de la universidad, se mud\u00f3 a San Francisco y comenz\u00f3 a trabajar en una florister\u00eda local a finales de la d\u00e9cada de 1970. Smith finalmente lleg\u00f3 al Mercado de Flores de San Francisco, donde trabaj\u00f3 para Kitayama Brothers, llenando y transportando cubos de claveles y rosas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Para 1981, ya se hab\u00eda hecho un nombre como la primera mujer gerente en trabajar dentro del mundo dominado por hombres de los productores y mayoristas en el mercado. Introdujo al mercado la idea de importar flores de Holanda, Israel y Sudam\u00e9rica, y se convirti\u00f3 en una experta en flores inusuales y \u00fanicas y sus necesidades posteriores a la cosecha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smith fue contratada para abrir un peque\u00f1o negocio de exportaci\u00f3n en la subasta de flores en Aalsmeer, Pa\u00edses Bajos, en 1983. Regres\u00f3 a los EE. UU. en 1986 y trabaj\u00f3 en Melridge Inc., donde perfeccion\u00f3 sus conocimientos de mercadotecnia y descubri\u00f3 su verdadero amor por el cuidado y la manipulaci\u00f3n de las flores. Tambi\u00e9n dirigi\u00f3 excursiones a granjas en toda Am\u00e9rica Central y Europa, ense\u00f1ando t\u00e9cnicas posteriores a la cosecha y c\u00f3mo comercializar productos florales \u00fanicos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 2001, se incorpor\u00f3 a Chrysal como gerente t\u00e9cnica para Norte y Sudam\u00e9rica, viajando a mayoristas, minoristas y supermercados, y compartiendo sus conocimientos sobre t\u00e9cnicas de cuidado y manipulaci\u00f3n, m\u00e9todos de hidrataci\u00f3n adecuados y la importancia de los niveles de pH para maximizar la vida \u00fatil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siempre dedicada a dar de su tiempo para ayudar a hacer avanzar la industria, Smith escribi\u00f3 cientos de art\u00edculos y dio decenas de presentaciones para promover flores saludables. Particip\u00f3 activamente en muchas organizaciones de la industria, incluida la Society of American Florists, donde siempre se la pod\u00eda encontrar ayudando con el Concurso de Variedades Sobresalientes asegur\u00e1ndose de que todas las inscripciones estuvieran hidratadas. Tambi\u00e9n particip\u00f3 activamente en la Wholesale Florists & Florists Suppliers Association y en la Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diagnosticada con c\u00e1ncer de ovario a principios de 2016, Smith luch\u00f3 contra la enfermedad con sus hermanas Joy y Susie a su lado, y nunca perdi\u00f3 su amor, esp\u00edritu y entusiasmo por las flores y la industria floral.
Le sobreviven sus hermanas, su hermano Danny y otros familiares William y Gabriel Kyne, David, Katie y Mark Doyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joy y Susie celebrar\u00e1n un homenaje a su vida el 24 de marzo a las 3:00 p.m. en la Unity Church of Portland, ubicada en el 4525 SE Stark Street, en Portland, Oreg\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
