Dr. Knuth is co-leading the American Floral Endowment\u2019s floriculture sustainability project with NC State\u2019s Dr. Brian Jackson.<br><\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #d68213;\"><strong>Read more about the project here: <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/endowment.org\/sustainability\/<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSome of these practices may be familiar or have existed for some time but have new products that are reinvigorating the category. Some practices are completely new ideas that have come about in the last year.\u201d Dr. Knuth says.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During an education session at the business-to-business floral show, Dr. Knuth shared some of the latest sustainability trends in floriculture, including:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>New materials for floral sleeves, <\/strong>such as plastic alternatives and biodegradable options;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Biodegradable hydration packs, <\/strong>which keep cut flowers fresh while minimizing waste;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Ozone sanitation \u2013<\/strong> a way to manage disease without chemical application;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Alternative fuel sources, <\/strong>such as biogas, which utilizes farm waste to produce an energy source;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Water conservation <\/strong>by planning water flows throughout a property with permeable surfaces and recycling;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Carbon accounting<\/strong> to track greenhouse gas emissions and potentially earn carbon credits; and<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>ESG investing \u2013<\/strong> a way to attract investors who prioritize sustainable business practices.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr. Knuth\u2019s goal was to give businesses one new piece of sustainability information that they can incorporate into their business. The American Floral Endowment\u2019s Sustainability Project aims to provide education and resources to the floral industry and make sustainability an accessible initiative for all segments of the industry. To complement our current efforts, we are looking for sustainability officers and related staff working in floriculture who are willing to share information about their company\u2019s ongoing programs. This could include efforts in composting, pot recycling, alternative substrates and recycling, carbon footprinting, nutrient use, lighting sources, integrated pest management, water conservation, and other areas.
