It recognizes exceptional internship performance through the Vic and Margaret Ball Intern Scholarship Program, administered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/\">American Floral Endowment (AFE)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2026 Paul Thomas Floriculture Production Intern of the Year recipient is <strong>Alana Wood<\/strong>. The 2026 honorable mentions of the award are <strong>Lemuel Dill<\/strong> and <strong>Parker Carlson<\/strong>. Lemuel is also a student at Kansas State University, majoring in horticulture production. Parker is a student at Texas State University, where he majors in agriculture with a concentration in horticulture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Paul Thomas Floriculture Production Intern of the Year recipient receives paid hotel and airfare to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultivateevent.org\/\">Cultivate<\/a>, an annual convention for the green industry presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhort.org\/\">AmericanHort<\/a>. This year\u2019s event will be held July 11-14, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio. As the winner of the Paul Thomas award, Alana is unable to attend the Cultivate event this year. Instead, Parker will attend, receiving free registration for the convention provided by AmericanHort as well as $500 spending cash courtesy of AFE\u2019s Young Professional Council. Parker will have an opportunity for networking, tours, workshops and learning more about industry needs. During the event, he will also receive a photo opportunity with AFE representatives and faculty members, as well as being featured in articles in AFE publications and trade press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alana will receive $250 and have the opportunity to serve on the review committee for the 2027 Paul Thomas selection. Lemuel will also receive $250 for his recognition as an honorable mention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInternships are where passion meets practice. And programs like this are more than just recognition. They are about investing in the future of floriculture,\u201d said Debi Chedester, CAE, Executive Director of AFE. \u201cThese students represent the next generation of leaders who will bring fresh ideas, energy and innovation to our industry. Recipients of this award truly embody the passion Dr. Thomas displayed for student programs and keep his spirit alive by pursuing industry opportunities. Students who have successfully completed a three-, four-, or six-month Vic &amp; Margaret Ball internship are eligible for the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alana Woods, Paul Thomas Floriculture Production Intern of the Year<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>3-Month Internship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purebeautyfarms.com\/\">Pure Beauty Farms<\/a> in Miami, Florida<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Alana-Wood.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24700\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7500141876170479;width:314px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Alana-Wood.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Alana-Wood-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Alana-Wood-540x720.jpeg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her time spent growing up on a farm in Solomon, Kansas, developed into a deep interest in horticulture for Alana. That persistent passion led her to Miami, where she spent from May through August in 2025 interning for Pure Beauty Farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a 2025 Vic and Margaret Ball Intern Scholarship Program recipient, the Kansas State University junior spent that summer immersed in the industry, focused on two main projects. Alana gained valuable experience in summer seed trials and poinsettia propagation, in addition to many lessons that strengthened her technical and soft skills in preparation for a career in the industry. She said the internship inspired her to seek out more opportunities to support her future plans, including learning Spanish to better communicate with teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis experience has really opened my eyes to many aspects of this industry that I can be a part of,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel confident in my future of being a head grower and working with plants from beginning to end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alana plans to graduate with her bachelor\u2019s degree in horticulture production and work at a greenhouse as an assistant grower, working her way up to head grower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Receiving the Paul Thomas Floriculture Production Intern of the Year Award is an honor, she said, noting that it was a welcomed recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThroughout my whole internship, I just learned so much, and receiving this award makes me feel like I represented AFE well and my hard work throughout the summer was recognized,\u201d she said. \u201cI am really grateful for the opportunity and the award. From graphical tracking to all the smaller, yet vital, details that matter in the creation of quality crops, Lemuel said he obtained valuable insights into how commercial plant producers function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI gained some great foundational knowledge that I will be able to take with me to future internships I choose to do, as well as for my future career path,\u201d he said. \u201cI am very grateful to NMG for having me on as a 6-month intern, because without them, I wouldn\u2019t be as knowledgeable about the commercial growing industry as I am now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From his hometown of Lenexa, Kansas, Lemuel is a junior at Kansas State University, working toward his undergraduate degree. As he reflects on his intern experience from June through December of 2025, he said it means even more to him to be recognized as an honorable mention for the Paul Thomas award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt gives extra props that it was worth the time. Six months is a long time to be away, but looking back, when I see how much I grew, knowing that others could see that growth solidifies that it was a really good experience,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope to take what I have learned and teach other people now that I have a broader understanding of the industry as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Parker Carlson<\/strong>, <strong>Honorable Mention<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>3-Month Internship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plantpeddler.com\/\">PlantPeddler<\/a> in Cresco, Iowa<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"212\" height=\"233\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24701\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.9098850164898832;width:263px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parker, a senior at Texas State University, traveled hundreds of miles from his school to his internship at PlantPeddler in Iowa. While there, he was exposed to greenhouse operations on a large scale, expanding his knowledge in daily greenhouse tasks, such as plant care, transplanting, scouting and order fulfillment. Overall, he said the internship was a balanced mix of physical work, problem solving, and plant management that helped him develop both technical and professional skills better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experience proved to be eye-opening for Parker, who noted that he was able to link classroom ideas and real-world applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe internship gave me the opportunity to gain a fleshed-out view of professional horticulture and the roles that make it possible,\u201d he said. \u201cI honed practical skills taught in the classroom, confirmed my love for horticulture and research, and strengthened my conviction towards combining high output production with sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parker is honored to travel to Cultivate this year, an experience he said he would not have otherwise had if it weren\u2019t for AFE and his advisor, Dr. Cade. He said he is grateful for those moments of being pushed out of his comfort zone and prepared him to take full advantage of the opportunities he will gain at the event in Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am hoping to meet very interesting people there and have the chance to tell more people about the opportunities that are available through AFE,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a chance to feel even more a part of the industry, and being in the industry, rather than just hearing about it, helps you feel less like an imposter. I was always raised that you will never regret anything you did as long as you gave it your all. I followed that in Iowa, I will at Cultivate, and I will continue to follow that throughout my career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout all of AFE\u2019s programs, there is a focus on empowering and uplifting young professionals.
