Her dream became a reality when she was awarded the <a title=\"AFE Scholarships\" href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/becas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>2013 Markham-Colegrave International Scholarship<\/strong><\/a>, funded by AFE and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmsend56.com\/link.cfm?r=0&amp;sid=29516704&amp;m=3306835&amp;u=SAFlorists&amp;j=0&amp;s=https:\/\/www.davidcolegravefoundation.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Colegrave Foundation<\/a><\/strong>.<br>\u201cWorking in another country opened my mind and gave me more perspective while broadening my horticultural experiences,\u201d Gasteyer said. \u201cSpending five months in Europe certainly had an impact on me and will continue to in the future.\u201d<\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/brookephoto3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2063\" class=\"wp-image-2063\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/brookephoto3-300x224.png\" alt=\"Brooke Gasteyer Markham Colegrave Recipient\" width=\"287\" height=\"215\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gasteyer at the Keukenhof flower show.<\/p><p>German wholesale nursery and internship host G\u00e4rtnerei Umbach put her straight to work with primulas and violas, which the nursery abundantly produces in many varieties. Later, she began planting new plants and taking goji cuttings.<br>In an effort to learn more about European horticulture, she toured prominent businesses, like a marketing organization called Landgard that connects wholesale growers with retailers. Landgard receives a portion of the profits if the wholesalers sell their plants, and they are returned to the wholesalers if they do not sell.<br>\u201cI was amazed at the wide variety of plants they had there!\u201d Gasteyer said.<\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/brookephoto4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2064\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2064\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/brookephoto4-158x300.png\" alt=\"Brooke Gasteyer Markham Colegrave Recipient\" width=\"158\" height=\"300\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gasteyer sight-sees at the Eiffel Tower.<\/p><p>She also had the opportunity to visit German nurseries and greenhouses, one of which used a large machine that was different than anything she had seen in the U.S. The machine could fill containers with soil, plant plugs in the containers and even plant multiple plants in the same container.<br>On a trip to England, she visited the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and the leading flower seed breeding company Floranova.<br>\u201cDuring my time at Floranova, I enjoyed learning a lot about plant breeding,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought it was really interesting to learn about the various processes involved.\u201d<br>University of Wisconsin-River Falls horticulture professor and student advisor Terry Ferriss, Ph.D., saw the internship confirm Gasteyer\u2019s commitment to the green industry.<br>\u201cBrooke used this international experience as an opportunity to push herself professionally, culturally and personally, and it paid off with great dividends,\u201d Ferriss said. \u201cWhat Brooke learned about the industry, European culture and herself would never have happened if she had not taken that leap of faith to go abroad.
