However, fresh eucalyptus doesn\u2019t last forever, which is why preservation techniques are crucial for extending its beauty. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.ashs.org\/horttech\/view\/journals\/horttech\/34\/6\/article-p666.xml\"><strong>A new study<\/strong><\/a> from Kansas State University, funded in part through AFE\u2019s James &amp; Helen Phillip Grant Scholarship, has revealed an effective and affordable method to preserve eucalyptus leaves using glycerin, a common household ingredient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preservation transforms fresh eucalyptus stems into long-lasting materials for floral design, botanical crafts, and d\u00e9cor. Historically, glycerin\u2014a substance used in food and cosmetics\u2014has been popular for preserving plant materials by replacing their natural moisture. While glycerin is effective, its usage can lead to challenges like faded leaf color or oily residue. The Kansas State University research team wanted to figure out the best ratio of glycerin to water for optimal preservation without these drawbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team conducted an experiment using <em>Eucalyptus pulverulenta<\/em> \u2018Baby Blue\u2019, a popular ornamental variety. Stems were placed in solutions of four glycerin-to-water ratios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>0% glycerin (control)<\/strong>: Water only.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>25% glycerin<\/strong>: A mix of one part glycerin to three parts water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>50% glycerin<\/strong>: Equal parts glycerin and water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>75% glycerin<\/strong>: Three parts glycerin to one part water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stems stayed in the solutions for two weeks in a controlled environment with consistent temperature and lighting. The researchers measured:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Solution Absorption<\/strong>: How much liquid the stems absorbed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leaf Color<\/strong>: The greenness of the leaves over time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stem Flexibility<\/strong>: Whether stems could bend without breaking\u2014a key feature for floral design.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5f05516810257530adc7ce367aa63733\"><strong>Principales hallazgos<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Solution Absorption<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stems in the water-only solution absorbed significantly more liquid (270 mL) compared to glycerin-treated stems, which absorbed less than 50 mL over the two-week period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glycerin-treated stems retained their weight better, indicating that glycerin helps lock in moisture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leaf Color<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All glycerin-treated stems lost some of their natural green color, starting around day six of the experiment. The 25% and 50% glycerin solutions showed the most noticeable fading.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To maintain vibrant foliage, dyes or paints may be needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stem Flexibility<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After two weeks in the solutions, all stems\u2014regardless of treatment\u2014were equally pliable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After an additional week stored dry, glycerin-treated stems were much more flexible than those in water alone. This fading occurs because glycerin disrupts the chlorophyll in the leaves. To combat this, you can add plant-safe dyes to the solution or spray-paint the preserved foliage for a more polished look.
