Like many of you, I\u2019m marveling at how quickly the year has flown by. It feels like we just sent out our last newsletter, and here we are closing out another year. Speaking of our last newsletter, I had mentioned that we had recorded the disease management sessions from Jim Faust and Francesca Hand at the ASCFG Regional Conference in Boulder, CO. We posted the recording, and you can view it <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2uxmexzSWlQ?si=8udNZGpcyUTb6oG0\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I look back at 2024, some things were fairly typical\u2014consistent challenges, rhythms, and successes that come with growing\u2014but there were also moments that stood out as unique.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ll start with one that hit home personally for me as someone who lives in the mountains of North Carolina. Yep, Hurricane Helene. The flooding we experienced up here was completely unprecedented and something no one could prepare for. The devastation I saw in my county was unimaginable. ASCFG recently did a nice piece on how smaller cut flower growers in NC are recovering. You can read it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascfg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Helene-article.pdf\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>. While I\u2019m talking about NC growers here, I recognize that many, many others in other locations were impacted by hurricanes Helene and Milton. Please feel free to reach out if there is any way that AFE can support you. Here are some resources that are available, although this list is by no means exhaustive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/asapconnections.org\/farmer-resources\/emergency-relief\/\"><strong>Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainbizworks.org\/helene\/\"><strong>Mountain BizWorks<\/strong> <\/a>(NC only)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/conservation-basics\/conservation-by-state\/florida\/news\/usda-nrcs-florida-expedites-disaster\"><strong>Florida EQIP<\/strong><\/a> (due December 20)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmers.gov\/protection-recovery\/hurricane\"><strong>USDA recovery assistance<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be sure to check with your local extension agent as well since they may have leads on local grants and recovery programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the pest management front, it seems I couldn\u2019t go to any conference or tour this year without hearing about Lewis mites. Lewis mites come in cycles, which is why I haven\u2019t heard about them every year. JC Chong from SePro shared some excellent Lewis mite info in his recent PestTalks columns, which you can find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growertalks.com\/Newsletters\/View\/?article=4735\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growertalks.com\/Newsletters\/View\/?article=4751\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>. They\u2019re definitely worth a read. He also links to some additional hurricane resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then there\u2019s the economic landscape. While I won\u2019t wade into politics, this year\u2019s election was certainly unprecedented for several reasons. There are also growing concerns about tariffs and how they\u2019ll impact growers. This was a big year for <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabloom.org\/\"><strong>Sustainabloom<\/strong><\/a>, with <strong>new <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabloom.org\/industry-guides\">industry guides<\/a><\/strong>, roundtable discussions at industry events, and the launching of a <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/news\/afe-launches-sustainabloom-campaign\/\"><strong>$2.5 million fundraising campaign<\/strong><\/a>. Reaching this goal will enable Sustainabloom to remain a lasting resource for the industry, ensuring it continues to evolve alongside sustainability trends and challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfZBJWJo5g5Povp5uQbhrC8MBvQ0hLk_zWYvg9dGNQC4HwAicVVMUYiXnHHcDHf7MPf-qNWdMbcBFC9gt5rgmqN5oqo6g3xzHvL9qjhxcsKukNblXELlGrp5x7CyO9ZFaUHpa_Fkg?key=uL1RhoM-w5LPsPbVRIbPsxiq\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:270px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a personal note, 2024 has been one of the most fulfilling years of my career, and that\u2019s largely thanks to <em>you<\/em>. Compiling this newsletter is a privilege, but what really stands out to me are the connections I\u2019ve made with so many of you at events throughout the year.
