{"id":2146,"date":"2016-08-29T11:35:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T11:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afe.epicenter1.com\/news\/students-honored-at-ashs-annual-conference"},"modified":"2024-03-18T22:03:58","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T22:03:58","slug":"students-honored-at-ashs-annual-conference","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/news\/students-honored-at-ashs-annual-conference","title":{"rendered":"Students Honored at ASHS Annual Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two students whose research projects have been supported by AFE were recognized during the 2016 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ashs.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS)<\/a><\/strong> Annual Conference held from Aug. 8 \u2013 11<em>, <\/em>2016 in Atlanta, Ga.<br>Clemson University student <strong>Katie Bennett<\/strong> received the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Presentation Award and <strong>Krishna Bhattarai<\/strong> of the University of Florida was awarded second place in the Graduate Student Poster Presentation.<br><\/p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8831\" class=\"wp-image-8831 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/KatieBennettJamesFaust-8.59.30-AM-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"Katie Bennett and Dr. James Faust.\" width=\"254\" height=\"300\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-8831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie Bennett and Dr. James Faust.<\/p><br>Bennett worked with Associate Professor Dr. James Faust at Clemson University on a project to reduce the incidence of petunia flower meltdown, a problem caused by Botrytis. Her research demonstrated that spraying petunias with calcium chloride twice weekly for two weeks prior to shipping reduced the severity of Botrytis infection by 80 percent.<br>\u201cKatie exceeded all of my expectations while working on this project,\u201d said Dr. Faust.<br>\u201cThis was a master\u2019s level project, and she knocked it out of the park. Because of her efforts, this was the most well-executed undergraduate research project that I\u2019ve had in my lab over my 16 years at Clemson,\u201d he said.<br>Bennett is beginning her final semester in floriculture and plans to continue working with Dr. Faust while obtaining her Master of Science degree.<br>Bhattarai, a doctoral student working with Dr. Zhanao Deng at the University of Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/Impatiens-Downy-Mildew-Presentation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>presented results of his research<\/strong><\/a> to identify genetic markers responsible for downy mildew resistance in impatiens.<br>Downy mildew has become a devastating disease of Impatiens walleriana.\u00a0Bhattarai has identified disease resistance and defense-related genes that are expressed in downy mildew-resistant New Guinea impatiens.<br>\u201cThe support from the Endowment is highly appreciated for this research,\u201d Bhattarai said.<br>Dr. Faust and Plant Pathologist Guido Schnabel are working on a new AFE-funded research project at Clemson University investigating methods to reduce Botrytis during production. The results of this project will be made available <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/investigacion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>free<\/strong><\/a> in 2017.<br><a
