{"id":2140,"date":"2016-09-23T20:51:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T20:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afe.epicenter1.com\/news\/2016-fundraising-dinner-a-big-success-in-maui"},"modified":"2024-03-18T22:03:37","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T22:03:37","slug":"2016-fundraising-dinner-a-big-success-in-maui","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/news\/2016-fundraising-dinner-a-big-success-in-maui","title":{"rendered":"2016 Fundraising Dinner a Big Success in Maui"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFE\u2019s biggest fundraising event of the year, the <strong>2016 Annual Fundraising Dinner<\/strong>, was an exciting and momentous evening, honoring industry champions and raising money for floriculture.<br><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8966 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/Crowd2016Dinner-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"crowd2016dinner\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\">The dinner, attended by nearly 300 industry members, was held on Sept. 22 in conjunction with the Society of American Florists\u2019 Annual Convention in Maui, Hawaii.<br>The event included the screening of AFE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/videos-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>new video<\/strong><\/a> that highlights floriculture success stories, recognizing donors reaching new giving levels, and live Hawaiian entertainment.<br>The highlight of the evening recognized five families\/organizations that created <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/afe-named-funds-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>new named funds<\/strong><\/a>. Today, the family has three main companies which include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagawagardens.com\/home-tagawa-gardens.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Invernaderos Tagawa<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 the production company producing young plants; Tagawa Gardens \u2014 a premier garden center in Colorado; and Ball Tagawa Growers \u2014 a partnership with Ball Horticultural Company producing young plants for the west coast market.<br>Their philosophy is to work hard, take care of their employees and keep the family together. The Tagawa family recognizes the importance of giving back to the industry and staying involved. Shimi passed away on Oct. 31, 2015 at 100 years old. Shimi was a past president of the Mt. Eden Floral Company and led the company for more than 55 years. Shimi served on the AFE Board of Trustees and the boards of several other industry organizations. In 2006 Shimi published his autobiography, \u201cAcross Two Worlds: Memoirs of a Nisei Flower Grower.\u201d<br>Shimi married Grace in 1947 and they had three children \u2014 Naomi, Robert and Michael. His grandson Alex began working for Mt.
