Son muy eficaces, pero ambos tienen sus inconvenientes. El 1-MCP es un gas reactivo que es dif\u00edcil de manejar y requiere \u00e1reas cerradas para su aplicaci\u00f3n. El STS contiene metales pesados, lo que plantea problemas ambientales y de eliminaci\u00f3n, especialmente cuando se utiliza en grandes cantidades. Tambi\u00e9n es sensible a la luz y debe prepararse justo antes de su uso, lo que puede resultar poco pr\u00e1ctico.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El 1-MCP pertenece a una familia de compuestos llamados ciclopropenos, que son potentes inhibidores del etileno. (El ciclopropeno principal es una mol\u00e9cula diminuta y triangular compuesta por tres \u00e1tomos de carbono y cuatro \u00e1tomos de hidr\u00f3geno.) Los ciclopropenos como el 1-MCP tienen una caracter\u00edstica estructural similar a la del etileno, lo que les permite unirse a los sitios receptores de etileno en las c\u00e9lulas vegetales sin desencadenar la respuesta al etileno, evitando as\u00ed que este ejerza sus efectos en los tejidos vegetales. (Esto se denomina inhibici\u00f3n competitiva.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El tiosulfato de plata contiene iones de plata (Ag+) que pueden alterar los receptores de etileno en las plantas. Estos receptores son prote\u00ednas ubicadas en la superficie de las c\u00e9lulas vegetales, las cuales son responsables de detectar y responder al etileno. Al interferir con estos receptores, los iones de plata impiden que el etileno interact\u00fae con ellos. Como resultado, las c\u00e9lulas vegetales no reciben la se\u00f1al del etileno y no se iniciar\u00e1n los efectos asociados al etileno. El STS tambi\u00e9n puede reducir la producci\u00f3n general de etileno en las plantas al inhibir la actividad de la enzima que es precursora del etileno.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>La b\u00fasqueda de mejores inhibidores de etileno&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Dr. Rasika Dias y su equipo de la Universidad de Texas en Arlington est\u00e1n trabajando para desarrollar sustancias qu\u00edmicas f\u00e1ciles de usar que puedan emplearse en la industria de la flor cortada para contrarrestar los efectos negativos del etileno. Tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n creando modelos de laboratorio simples de los sitios de uni\u00f3n del etileno en las plantas para probar alternativas potenciales al 1-MCP de manera m\u00e1s conveniente y comprender mejor c\u00f3mo act\u00faa el 1-MCP en los sitios de uni\u00f3n del etileno.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Resultados prometedores&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El equipo de investigaci\u00f3n ha sintetizado varias alternativas no vol\u00e1tiles al 1-MCP, las cuales se probaron para determinar su actividad anti-etileno utilizando claveles frescos. Algunas de estas alternativas mostraron una buena solubilidad en agua en comparaci\u00f3n con el 1-MCP y fueron m\u00e1s convenientes de usar. Dos de las alternativas de ciclopropeno probadas mostraron una actividad anti-etileno razonable, mientras que un tercer reactivo con carbono central mostr\u00f3 una actividad anti-etileno muy fuerte. Estos emocionantes hallazgos representan un nuevo enfoque para el dise\u00f1o de antagonistas del etileno.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El equipo tambi\u00e9n logr\u00f3 crear cuatro mol\u00e9culas aislables que presentan enlaces cobre-etileno, los cuales creen que pueden servir como modelos de laboratorio para el sitio de uni\u00f3n de cobre y etileno en las plantas (figura 2). Los iones de cobre son esenciales para la funci\u00f3n de los receptores de etileno en las plantas, los cuales tienen centros de cobre.
