{"id":1719,"date":"2016-04-13T14:20:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-13T14:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afe.epicenter1.com\/news\/afe-awards-2016-altman-family-scholarship"},"modified":"2026-04-20T10:07:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T10:07:24","slug":"afe-awards-2016-altman-family-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/news\/afe-awards-2016-altman-family-scholarship","title":{"rendered":"AFE Awards 2016 Altman Family Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Joshua Henry of North Carolina State University has received the 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/floriculture-msphd-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Altman Family Scholarship.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><br><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8012\" width=\"271\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-8012 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/JoshuaHenry-271x300.jpg\" alt=\"Joshua Henry\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henry is the first recipient of the <strong>Altman Family Scholarship<\/strong>, which was created in 2015 by Ken and Deena Altman, owners of Altman Plants. The Altmans are highly appreciative of the field of horticulture and support numerous efforts to improve education and research for the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7071\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"wp-image-7071 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/KenDeenaAltman-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Ken and Deena Altman\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This merit-based, prestigious scholarship assists in funding the education of floriculture graduate students (MS or Ph.D.), who will become leading floricultural scientists and educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Joshua Henry<\/strong> is pursuing a Master of Science at North Carolina State University and is an active member of several horticultural activities and clubs, including the Horticultural Science Graduate Student Association. Henry will receive $5,900 in funding from this scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFloriculture and greenhouse production have been my passion for many years and I am so excited to be pursuing my master\u2019s degree in this amazing field,\u201d\u00a0said Henry.<br>\u201cThis scholarship will make such a difference as I continue my education and I am so thankful to AFE and the Altman family for making opportunities like this available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henry performed a <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/JoshHenryStudentReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>six-month internship<\/strong><\/a> at Smith Gardens in 2015 through AFE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/internships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Vic &amp;\u00a0Margaret Ball Intern Program<\/strong><\/a>, and \u201ctruly raised the bar for all future interns,\u201d said Don Spence, Production Manager and Intern Director at Smith Gardens in Oregon.<br>Henry\u2019s primary area of research is in plant nutrition of annuals and potted plants, specifically with phosphorus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>He finds it rewarding to help diagnose different plant issues with growers. His aspiration is to help growers directly through extension and indirectly through research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>AFE provides <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/becas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 20 additional scholarships<\/a><\/strong> annually to undergraduate and graduate students, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/floriculture-msphd-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Paul Ecke, Jr.
