{"id":1475,"date":"2019-06-10T18:53:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T18:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afe.epicenter1.com\/news\/afe-2019-altman-family-scholars"},"modified":"2024-03-18T22:17:22","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T22:17:22","slug":"afe-2019-altman-family-scholars","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/news\/afe-2019-altman-family-scholars","title":{"rendered":"AFE 2019 Altman Family Scholars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AFE\u2019s 2019 Altman Family Scholars:\u00a0<br>Paul Cockson, Yiyun Lin, and David Tork<\/strong><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/b0aad849-f1ca-404c-8b81-a7db9462f73b.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"120\" data-file-id=\"693309\">The Altman Family Scholarship was created in 2015 by Ken and Deena Altman\u2014owners of Altman Plants\u2014as one of the numerous efforts supported by the couple to improve education and research for the industry. The scholarship provides $5,000 to\u00a0assist in funding the education of full-time graduate students (MS or Ph.D.) who will become leading floricultural scientists and educators.\u00a0Ken Altman has been actively involved in AFE\u2019s Education and Scholarship Committees and has served on the AFE Board for more than a decade, currently in an Emeritus status.<\/p><p>This year, the Altman Fund is supporting three graduate students currently enrolled in masters programs at leading institutions. All three not only are already engaged in meaningful research but demonstrate qualities of leadership and commitment to the industry, along with excellent communication skills.<\/p><p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/216e7d78-cbfb-416a-95ee-80aa9d9f7437.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" data-file-id=\"693281\"><strong>Paul Cockson, North Carolina State University<\/strong><\/em><br>Paul became interested in plant science well before he was an undergraduate at North Carolina State University, where he is currently enrolled in the Masters of Horticulture Science program. A summer internship, working on a project relating to tobacco-plant nutrient disorders, turned into two years of undergraduate work. The project ultimately resulted in five articles in peer-reviewed journals, two awards for Paul\u2019s work at national and international conferences, four popular press magazine articles, and over twenty extension publications\u2014an astonishing output of productivity.<\/p><p>One of Paul\u2019s current research projects is aimed at one of the floral industry\u2019s trendiest and most in-demand products: succulents. With the use of plant growth regulators, he hopes to enhance the production of new shoots in different species, reducing the time it takes for a pot to fill out. Later in the year, he and an undergraduate mentee will grow poinsettia cultivars sent by different companies and will ask members of the public to rate them, gathering useful market data.<\/p><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/7bb4219c-acb4-442c-b855-fabc2d71f965.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"200\" data-file-id=\"693273\">Yiyun Lin, Ohio State University\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br>What could be more important to the floral industry than research on flower longevity? At Ohio State University, Yiyun Lin\u2019s graduate research is focused on unlocking the key to what causes petals to wilt and die, in terms of physiology and genetics.<\/p><p>She has also been active in efforts to reach out to young people who might have an interest in horticulture careers. Yiyun has been an activity group leader for a science education event aimed at middle schoolers, introducing them to greenhouse crop production, and a team leader for another event designed to help high school students identify future careers. Yiyun is also a member of AFE\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/es\/ypc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Young Professionals Council.<\/a><\/p><p>Yiyun\u2019s goals are high: she aims at nothing less than becoming a pioneer in biotechnology research as it applies to floriculture crops. \u201cWhat helps me the most,\u201d she affirms, \u201cis being surrounded by really awesome, passionate people who are trying to make an impact in the world.\u201d<\/p><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/endowment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported-files\/3f6488a9-35d0-4880-8933-7899156f6a90.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" data-file-id=\"693277\">David Tork, University of Minnesota \u2013 Twin Cities\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br>David is working with two cultivars: one with long, unbranched flowering stems, another with short, highly branched stems and dense foliage. \u201cBy quantifying the vase life potential, and by identifying ideal cut flower plant habit,\u201d he writes in his scholarship application, \u201cwe will be able to select and breed lines which are ideal candidates for the cut-flower industry.\u201d<br>This July, David will be presenting the results of his study at the 2019 Annual Conference of the American Society for Horticultural Science. Earlier this year he participated in the National Floriculture Forum, a meeting supported by the American Floral Endowment that brings together academics, government scientists, and industry leaders.<\/p><p>\u201cMy advisor always joked with me when I started, \u2018You\u2019ll know when you\u2019re plugged into this and you can\u2019t turn it off, because you start having dreams about it.\u2019 That does start to happen after a while.\u201d<\/p><p>Those are good dreams to have\u2014dreams that will soon turn into realities to benefit all of us who have a professional passion for
