Thanks to the generous support of the American Floral Endowment and the Gus Poesch Fund, I had the opportunity to present my research at the 2018 American Society of Horticultural Science Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities this meeting has provided to my developing professional career.
I began my time at the meeting by attending the ASHS Strategic Career Planning seminar. This seminar provided beneficial insights from academic and industry leaders to my own professional development. Throughout the meeting, I was presented with a multitude of networking opportunities, engaged in conversations about research with colleagues, and fostered professional relationships with industry members.
I also attended a variety of working groups within different disciplines of horticultural science, allowing me to connect with colleagues that share similar research interests as myself. I am extremely grateful that I am able to establish these relationships which will play a fundamental role in my future career in horticultural research.
In addition to networking opportunities, I was able to present my graduate research on the “Identification of Rhizobacteria with the Ability to Increase Floriculture Crop Quality.” I received the second-place award in the Floriculture Session graduate student competition for this presentation. It was an honor to present my graduate research at one of the most prominent conferences in our industry and share my results with a group of successful industry professionals.
Attending research talks by other scientists allowed me to gain better insights on the issues that our industry faces, and what our researchers are doing to solve these important issues. The professional relationships that I have made and the knowledge that I have gained from attending the 2018 ASHS Annual Meeting will have a lasting impact on my professional career. I look forward to continued research and active involvement in the horticulture industry.
