Feb. 1 2013 – Calling all floriculture and horticulture students! Now is your chance to apply for a scholarship through the  American Floral Endowment (AFE)! The deadline is May 1 to submit applications for more than 20 scholarships available for sophomore through senior students, as well as graduate students.

AFE encourages students to apply for scholarships early as the need for financial assistance in floriculture and environmental horticulture programs is great. For 2013, AFE will award students with more than $34,000 in scholarships.

“Students are tomorrow’s leaders, and an investment in their future is an investment in the floriculture industry,” AFE Executive Director Debi Aker said.

Complete descriptions of each AFE scholarship offered—including three new scholarships—along with the application and requirements can be found here. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted online and received by the May 1 deadline.

Memorial Tribute Established for Bill Belden PDF Print E-mail

Jan. 24, 2013 – A memorial tribute has been established within the American Floral Endowment (AFE) honoring William C. “Bill” Belden, president of the Oscar G. Carlstedt Company in Jacksonville, Fla. Belden died Jan. 1 at age 82.

The Pete Garcia Company in Atlanta established the tribute honoring Belden, who had been battling several health issues for a few years.

“This should open many opportunities for our industry to remember Bill," Pete Garcia, CEO of the Pete Garcia Company, said.

Belden’s wife, Emily, was by his side during his last moments and other family members were also close at hand.

 

Belden, originally from Xenia, Ohio, spent the majority of his life in the floral industry. He got his start at the Oscar G. Carlstedt Company as a truck driver but left to serve in the U.S. Air Force. He returned to the company after his military service and was assigned to locations in West Palm Beach and Miami, and he was later appointed manager of the Ft. Lauderdale store. In 1965, he was named president.

AFE Announces Three New Floriculture Scholarships PDF Print E-mail

Jan. 10, 2013 – The American Floral Endowment (AFE) is announcing three new scholarships that will begin in 2013: The American Florists' Exchange Scholarship, The Julio and Sarah Armellini Scholarship and the Richard T. Meister Scholarship!

With more than 20 different scholarships now available through AFE, floriculture and horticulture students are sure to find a scholarship that fits their area of study. Scholarships range from $500-$5,000 and are awarded annually. Applications must be submitted online and are due, along with supporting materials, no later than May 1 each year.

 

AFE is extremely excited to have the opportunity to help more students become future floriculture leaders with these three new scholarships,” Dwight Larimer, the chair of AFE’s Education Committee, said. “These generous scholarships will be influential in helping aspiring industry members learn about all aspects of floriculture and horticulture.”

Markham-Colegrave International Scholarship Recipient Wins European Horticultural Experience PDF Print E-mail

Jan. 8, 2013 – Brooke Gasteyer, a senior studying horticulture at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, was awarded the Markham-Colegrave International Scholarshipthrough the American Floral Endowment (AFE) and the David Colegrave Foundation to study horticulture in Germany. 

From late February through July, Gasteyer will intern at Gärtnerei Umbach, a wholesale nursery in Heilbronn, Germany that sells potted plants, potted perennial shrubs, tree ferns and goji berries. During her time at the nursery, Gasteyer hopes to learn more about all aspects of the horticulture business and gain skills she can use in her future career.

“I had wanted to go to Europe for a very long time, and in the back of my mind I wanted to do a horticulture experience in Europe, but I never thought it was realistic,” Gasteyer said.

The American Floral Endowment (AFE) is now accepting applications for the Paul Ecke Jr. Scholarship. If you are a graduate student with the skills and passion to become the next great floriculture researcher or educator, submit your application to AFE by February 1, 2013. More Information and Application.

The Scholarship honors the late Paul Ecke, Jr. of Encinitas, CA who made significant contributions to the floriculture industry and believed strongly in research and education.

The primary objective of the Paul Ecke Jr. Scholarship is to assist in funding the education of graduate students (MS or PhD) who will become leading floricultural scientists and educators. Each year, one student will receive $5,000 for two consecutive years (providing that they continue to meet requirements for this duration and submit an annual update).
