Mabel Claprood Simmons Honored By AFE Memorial Tribute

In loving memory of his late sister, a Memorial Tribute has been established within the American Floral Endowment for Mabel Claprood Simmons who died at the age of 83, on April 26, 2000, in Ruskin, Florida. In establishing the tribute, Floyd Claprood stated, "I am pleased to have this resource to honor my sister, as she devoted her life to the floral industry and served on the Board of Directors for The American Floral Endowment for many years.

Simmons' contribution to the floral industry focused on improved production and marketing efficiencies. She was also credited with being the first women to operate a Gladiola farm in Florida, at one time being the largest flower produce in the state of Florida and developing Gladiola's that sprout earlier and ways to protect the sensitive plants from frost and disease.

She served on the American Floral Endowment Board of Directors from 1973-1982. She was instrumental in providing the leadership that enabled the Endowment to reach it's first milestone, $1M dollars in contributions. Additionally, her visionary leadership skills and passion for the industry sparked new innovative programs, which are still in existence today, and continue to help the industry grow.

Today, thanks to Mrs. Simmon's vision and leadership, the Endowment continues to be the floral industry's only not-for-profit organization supported by every industry segment and totally dedicated to funding research and educational development programs for the good of the entire industry. Over $9 million has been invested for research and development.

Memorial Tributes are available as a way to remember and honor industry members, family and friends in perpetuity. Mabel Claprood Simmons' name will be added to the Memorial Wall at the American Floral Endowment headquarters. Additional contributions may be made to the Mabel Simmons Memorial Tribute by sending a check so designated to the American Floral Endowment, 11 Glen-Ed Professional Park, Glen Carbon, Illinois 62034.
