Trustees See Firsthand Southern Hospitality

Dr. Kevin Heinz from the Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. provided a comprehensive overview of the facilities, staff, and scientific research projects. Department head Dr. Ray Frisbie welcomed the board. A tour of the lab facilities was given, and the trustees witnessed firsthand experiments studying the following: IPM in Poinsettia, Thrips biological control, measuring insect movement, literature database biological control in production nurseries, the role of insecticides in 1PM. and reducing Inputs in 1PM. Dr. Jim Johnson gave a brief overview of the Floral Design Program at Texas A&M. Southern hospitality was in full bloom as the Ellisons - Jim. Ellen. and P.J. from EllisonÕs Greenhouses. Inc. hosted the board at a southern BBQ and country dance. The evening also featured a special guest appearance by Sam Houston.
Ball & Mosmiller Scholars Named
The American Floral EndowmentÕs Internship/Scholarship programs continue to grow. The internship committees selected 26 students who were awarded paid internship placements and cash scholarships totaling more than $60,000. The Vic and Margaret Ball Program provides students with a hands-on experience at commercial production facilities. Students receive a paid experience and a cash scholarship ranging from $1,500 to $6,000.
The Mosmiller Scholar Program provides paid internships to students interested in a career as a retail florist. wholesaler or in an allied trade company. In addition, $2,000 cash scholarships are granted to students who successfully complete the internship. Students interested in the program must apply through a faculty member at their college or university. Application deadlines are March 1 and November 1.
